History of California Sweet Potato Council
The California Sweet Potato Council was officially formed in January, 1977, when a small group of influential growers decided that an official, voluntary organization would benefit the industry. Prior to 1977, marketing efforts done mainly through the Farm Bureau or by individual growers.
The main objective of the Council is, "To put together polices and programs which enhance the Sweet Potato industry in California". The first official meeting was held on January 18, 1977, at Eiland Hall in Livingston. It consisted of a general meeting held in conjunction with the Extension Winter Sweet Potato meeting, followed by an executive meeting.
